Think about what happened during that time. The European powers had very strong militaries, so they were colonizing many parts of the world. So my guess is that your teacher is asking you to focus on the colonization and imperialism, and how they differed between the three places.
As a start, China was pretty isolationist at the time.
Japan, I believe, was about to enter the Meiji Restoration.
